the job interview

the job interview

The job interview remains the most important part of the application process. Above all, the interviewer will sound out your motivation. Can you do the job, do you want to, and will you fit in?

The most important rule to remember is: be yourself! Both sides hope it will turn out well. You’re looking for a job, and the business is looking for an employee!

Preparation is half the battle...
You can make really useful preparations for the interview at home! For example, you can find out more about the company and the position, using the library, the Internet and contacts with employees from the company.
The same questions are often asked in job interviews. You can prepare for them by thinking up answers to the following questions in advance:

  • Why did you choose this course of study?
  • Why do you want to work at this company?
  • Why do you want this job?
  • What do you expect from this work?
  • Why should you be given this job rather than anybody else?
  • Can you name a few of your strengths and weaknesses?

How to manage the interview
To start with, dress neatly and adapt to the business culture. Make sure that you are on time, or let your interviewer know if you have been unexpectedly held up. It is not a problem at all if you are a little nervous: it shows that you really want the job. A few tips:

  • Maintain eye contact with your interviewer.
  • Be honest and complete. Be specific: back up what you say with examples.
  • Think for a few seconds before answering a question.
  • Speak slowly, but be enthusiastic – if you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions. For example, “Was my answer clear?” “How does the rest of the recruitment procedure work?” Make sure that you have a few positive questions if you are asked at the end if you have any further questions. Shake hands as you say goodbye to those present, and thank them for their time.
